Henri Rousseau, known as Le Douanier Rousseau is a naïve French self-taught painter, whose basic job was to control the entry of alcoholic beverages into Paris, which earned him the nickname Douanier!
The very accomplished technique of his painting contrasted (for his contemporaries) with his childish aspect. It took him a few years to emerge from the Salon des Indépendants and finally be recognized. Today considered an essential link in Naïve Art, it has had a lasting influence, particularly on the surrealists.
